THE CHALLENGE

Why this matters

Bermuda runs almost entirely on imported diesel, producing some of the most expensive electricity in the world. The island’s grid is ageing, centralised, and structurally vulnerable. Every home, every business, every school, every hospital pays the direct cost of this dependency every month. This is not an energy-transition planning problem. It is a national security problem that happens to have an energy-shaped answer.
THE APPROACH
The flagship energy campus is being developed around baseload molten-carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) generation. MCFCs are proven, high-efficiency, low-emission generation systems operating commercially worldwide. What makes them right for Bermuda is their combination of fuel flexibility, high electrical efficiency, near-zero NOx/SOx emissions, and the ability to produce usable heat and high-concentration CO2 as by-products.
Layered over the MCFC baseload are two complementary storage technologies. Vanadium redox flow batteries handle grid balancing. Iron-air batteries provide long-duration storage — multi-day resilience that keeps the island powered through extended disruptions.
The MCFC exhaust stream produces high-concentration CO2, which feeds directly into L32 Food’s controlled-environment agriculture — a closed-loop integration that turns an energy by-product into a food-production input.
L32 Energy’s service model extends beyond the flagship campus — delivering generation, storage, and monitoring solutions across residential, commercial, and industrial sites throughout Bermuda.

Solar is an important, affordable cog in the mix. Bermuda has some of the best solar resource in the North Atlantic, and photovoltaics are now the lowest-cost new generation available to the island. L32 Energy deploys high-output N-type panels, hybrid inverters and modular battery storage across homes, businesses and community sites — distributed generation that cuts bills today and adds resilience when the grid goes down. Solar is not the whole strategy: it is one part of a layered system in which the fuel-cell campus provides firm baseload, storage provides balancing and long-duration backup, and solar provides low-cost daytime energy where it is used.

How Energy connects to everything

L32 Energy is the generation layer for the entire L32 ecosystem. Power feeds L32 Living at a fixed rate below the grid price. CO₂ from the MCFC exhaust feeds L32 Food’s controlled-environment agriculture, accelerating crop yields. CHP absorption cooling supports the L32 Digital data-centre facility. And every system — generation, storage, distribution — is monitored and optimised through L32 Digital’s platform layer. Every unit of power is allocated across the platform, every by-product is captured and used, and no energy is wasted because the system is designed as a system.
